Many families do not move to be closer to be able to visit. They drive in on the weekend and then they leave. So don't worry about that if any move in it is a very small number and you will not know that they live there. On to the economic benefits of BOP staff living in Berlin. Berlin should have had in the works, housing, medical and shopping on the agenda for improvement. BOP staff looking to move there will be looking for 3 bedroom home with attached garage, a decent yard and good schools. If the schools aren't real good you can almost forget them moving to Berlin. BOP staff will drive up to 2 hours one way to come to work. If the town of Berlin has not prepared for these they need to hop on it and get the ball rolling so in the future when new BOP staff move in Berlin will look real good to them. Even though the salaries have been posted people tend to raise the rent and raise the price of their house they are selling. Really those salaries are true by the time taxes, retirement, insurance and any other things is taken out of their check there is not a whole lot left to spend. BOP staff are good people and love to be envolved in the community, so welcome them with open arms you will be happy you did. Many will come from different parts of the country and their ways will be very different, some will talk with a VERY southern drawl and others will have accents that you may not have heard before, so take it in stride. Thank you for reading this and I hope that it helps.

Cate St. Capital has been an Economic Savior for Berlin/Gorham. Cascade is Back in Business and Berlin can look forward to the Impressive Economic Benefits of the Biomass Plant and Future Green Technology Co-Locators. All Thanks to some VERY Able Leadership lately. Some will continue to moan, but Tellingly they offer NO concrete solutions, just Blame and Finger Pointing. They're Pathetic, Really ...

It does not look like the Prison will open any time soon, barring a National State of Emergency. Is that why it was built? What a waste of Tax Dollars and Good Forrest Land. We are now left with an Unuseable White Elephant. Congratulations to ALL who were in favor of this. And Shame on those who were itching to make a living by cageing their fellow man. We have Plenty of Prisons and Way too many Laws. Also a Greek Trajedy of an Economy...

First... the vans are shaws vans. Save a lot ISNT shaws. It is sold and own privately. and with the RENT on the building alone coming from someone who personally knows what it was... NOTHING will EVER GO IN THERE. That building is in need of many repairs. Roof, AC units etc. NOPE and the zoning board in Gorham would be the first to hear. AND we havent heard a thing

Although the recession hits all aspects of the economy, some greater than other's, Berlin has always had the ability considering it's location and resources to diverse it's base, but through it's lack of vision and ignorance to the Mill mentality and it's stubborness to see that the Union metality is obsolete and out of touch, the lesson's of the single Horse communities has been learned all over this Country, I for one brought those lesson's back in the 90's to the Council to educate them on how to Diverse your economic base and insulate yourself from economic down turns. But the ignorance of the Mill mentality is a difficult skin to shed, Berlin's economic future will be clouded and will stumble for many years to come unless as a Community it can do 2 things, remove the blinders, understand that the industry that built this community is systematically destroying it, and 2. The people who so dearly hold on to power and desicion making, open the doors to new ideas and new strategies, the Union's , what's left of them, must be de-classified, A City manager can't direct his staff if his Dept. managers are also union, one of the single deterants for the Mills survival was the Unions, they single handedly broke the backs of the Companies that were feeding them, remove the political belief that the State and federal Government are the bearers of the future, learn to create your on Path and Pay for it. The Communities Surrounding berlin, have been surviving with what they have for resources, some will say that it doesn't do enough, but it's still diverse enough to stave off economic disaster, Berlin can lead this region, if it wants to, it has the infrastucture, but not the leadership, until it sheds it's closed door reputation this community is doomed to be the home of a low to moderate income economy and high crime, you need to ask your self one question, how long can I wait. an interesting comment comes to mind, on the night we secured the building of the State prison, my Collegue from Ward 3 Jim Wiswell, leaned back in chair and said, "well, we just created 300 jobs, now we don't have to do a thing""
Tme to wake up Berlin!

I know this is an old post, but I seriously doubt Market Basket would be interested. It's 90+ miles from their nearest location, which would make for a logistical nightmare keeping the store supplied regularly and having the store operate profitably.

Who MIGHT be interested? The most logical suitor for this location is Hannaford. Their North Conway store is 32 miles away, while the Bethel Shop 'N Save (which they supply but don't own) is 24 miles away. That's much more like it. Hannaford also has a history in the market, having operated Sampsons supermarkets in both Berlin and Gorham in the past (did they stick around up there long enough for the Shop 'N Save name change?)

Another intriguing possibility might be Price Chopper. They took over the old P&C in Lincoln (48 miles away) back in May. They also have a full-sized supermarket in St. Johnsbury, VT (54 miles away.) The distance between Lincoln and St Jay is 48 miles. Greater than Hannaford, but evidently it's close enough for Price Chopper to make the numbers work.

But ultimately, you have to ask, with a Walmart Supercenter in town plus another low-cost operator (Save-A-Lot, a corporate sister of Shaw's) plus the IGA in Berlin, can the market really support a traditional full-sized supermarket? It's a question worth pondering in light of Shaw's departure and of Hannaford Bros. before them.

If the community has section 8 housing or very low income housing available the families will come. It depends on what already exists there. Milan Dummer stark Errol will not be affected by these families. Berlin is already inhabitated by the lower income class. If you have it they will come!
